Lexical Choice for Complex Noun Phrases
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a lexical choice component for complex noun phrases. We rst explain why lexical choice for NPs deserves special attention within the standard pipeline architecture for a generator. The task of the lexical chooser for NPs is more complex than for clauses because the syntax of NPs is less understood than for clauses, and therefore, syntactic realization components, while they accept a predicate-argument structure as input for clauses, require a purely syntactic tree as input for NPs. The task of mapping conceptual relations to di erent syntactic modi ers is therefore left to the lexical chooser for NPs. The paper focuses on the syntagmatic aspect of lexical choice, identifying a process called \NP planning". It focuses on a set of communicative goals that NPs can satisfy and speci es an interface between the di erent components of the generator and the lexical chooser. The technique presented for NP planning encapsulates a rich lexical knowledge and allows for the generation of a wide variety of syntactic constructions. It also allows for a large paraphrasing power because it dynamically maps conceptual information to various syntactic slots.

Semi-Automatic Recognition of Noun Modifier Relationships
Semantic relationships among words and phrases are often marked by explicit syntactic or lexical clues that help recognize such relationships in texts. Within complex nominals, however, few overt clues are available. Systems that analyze such nominals must compensate for the lack of surface clues with other information. One way is to load the system with lexical semantics for nouns or adjective...
متن کاملRecognising Complex Prepositions Prep+N+Prep as Negative Patterns in Automatic Term Extraction from Texts
This work is a study of the delimitation of complex prepositions (CP) as lexical units, items of a computational lexicon that includes compounds and phrases. In addition, given the utmost importance of spotting noun phrases (NP) in document retrieval systems, parsing prepositional structures such as “Prep1 N Prep2 X” prevents the fragment “N Prep2 X” from being detected as a noun phrase, i.e. t...
متن کاملInterpreting Compound Noun Phrases Using Web Search Queries
A weakly-supervised method is applied to anonymized queries to extract lexical interpretations of compound noun phrases (e.g., “fortune 500 companies”). The interpretations explain the subsuming role (“listed in”) that modifiers (fortune 500) play relative to heads (companies) within the noun phrases. Experimental results over evaluation sets of noun phrases from multiple sources demonstrate th...
متن کاملThe Role of Lexical and Contextual Information in Parsing Ambiguous Sentences in Greek
This study reports results from a sentence completion task and a self-paced reading experiment examining relative clause (RC) attachment preferences in native speakers of Greek. To determine the role of lexical-semantic as well as referential context information for RC attachment, we examined two constructions under different context conditions: RCs preceded by complex noun phrases with genitiv...
متن کاملLexical Planning in Sentence Production Is Highly Incremental: Evidence from ERPs
The scope of lexical planning, which means how far ahead speakers plan lexically before they start producing an utterance, is an important issue for research into speech production, but remains highly controversial. The present research investigated this issue using the semantic blocking effect, which refers to the widely observed effects that participants take longer to say aloud the names of ...
